Model Overview

The Chery Omoda O5 GT is a C-segment compact sports sedan launched under Chery’s global export sub-brand OMODA, serving essentially as the overseas rebadged version of the China-market Chery Arrizo 5 GT. The model made its initial global debut in Mexico in August 2023, catering primarily to overseas markets such as Mexico, Russia, Australia, and Southeast Asia. In its home market, it was launched in 2022 under the Arrizo 5 GT nameplate with an official price range of RM79,900 to RM109,900. In overseas markets, the Omoda O5 GT is offered in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,710 mm in length, 1,829 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height, with a 2,670 mm wheelbase, positioning it squarely in the C-segment sedan class. The car’s key selling points centre around its 'Lexus-inspired aggressive front fascia, punchy 1.6T turbocharged powertrain, and sports-tuned chassis', earning it the moniker 'the affordable Lexus for younger drivers' in selected overseas markets.

Design Language

Styling-wise, the Omoda O5 GT boasts an unmistakable road presence, headlined by a large spindle-style gloss black front radiator grille flanked by sharp L-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and slim headlamp clusters, bearing a strong visual resemblance to Lexus' signature styling. The side profile adopts a dynamic, nose-down stance with blacked-out window trim and wing mirrors, complemented by black sports alloy rims and contrasting red brake calipers to accentuate its athletic appeal. Round the back, it retains signature Chery design cues, underscored by quad exhaust tailpipes to deliver an assertive, performance-oriented aesthetic. Inside, the Omoda O5 GT features a twin 10.25-inch dual integrated screen layout reminiscent of Mercedes-Benz cockpits. The GT variant gains dedicated sporty appointments, including faux leather sports bucket seats with red contrast stitching (optional Lava Red interior), carbon fibre-style trim inserts, and aluminium sports pedals, with higher-spec grades adding seat heating and ventilation functions for the front occupants. Furthermore, the GT AWD variant rides on 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and comes with a full-size spare tyre instead of a tyre repair kit.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the Omoda O5 GT offers two petrol engine options. The flagship model is powered by a 1.6-litre TGDI four-cylinder turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine (Kunpeng Power 1.6TGDI), generating between 137 kW and 145 kW (approx. 186 PS to 197 PS, subject to market-specific tuning) and peak torque of 275 Nm to 290 Nm, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (7DCT). This powertrain completes the century sprint (0-100 km/h) in around 6 seconds (with some versions claiming sub-6-second figures), reaching a top speed of 210 km/h. In select markets, the 1.6T engine incorporates variable-geometry turbocharging (VGT) technology and a 350-bar direct injection system, achieving a thermal efficiency of 37.1%. Elsewhere, certain overseas markets offer an optional 1.5-litre MPI Turbo four-cylinder engine rated at 115 kW (circa 156 PS) and 230 Nm, paired with a CVT with 9 virtual ratios. In terms of fuel efficiency, the 1.6T variant returns a combined fuel consumption of approximately 7.1 L/100 km to 7.4 L/100 km. Fuel tank capacity is rated at 48 litres.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the Omoda O5 GT receives notable chassis upgrades over the standard derivative. Up front, it features MacPherson strut independent suspension, while the rear on the 1.6T GT variant is upgraded to a multi-link independent setup (compared to the torsion beam non-independent rear suspension on the baseline 1.5T model), significantly improving rear-axle tracking and ride refinement. The braking hardware has also been beefed up: 308 mm ventilated front discs (up from 283 mm) and 313 mm solid rear discs (up from 263 mm), providing stronger stopping power and superior thermal fade resistance. Drivetrain options include front-wheel drive (FWD) and on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD), with the AWD version delivering enhanced traction across wet asphalt and light unpaved surfaces. Drivers can switch between four drive modes: ECO, Normal, Sport, and Super Sport; activating Super Mode triggers pulsing ambient cabin lighting alongside synthetic sports exhaust sound. The steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system that delivers a light, easy steering feel with well-judged damping feedback. Tyre dimensions are 215/55 R18.

Cabin & Features

Inside the cabin, the Omoda O5 GT comes standard with twin 10.25-inch floating integrated displays (upgraded to a 24.6-inch dual-screen setup in select markets), seamlessly housing the digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen side by side. The system runs on the Lion 5.0 intelligent ecosystem, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G telematics, and over-the-air (OTA) remote software updates. The range-topping GT variant is equipped with an 8-speaker Sony premium audio system tuned by the Golden Ears master acoustic team, paired with 64-colour dynamic ambient lighting for an immersive audio-visual experience. In terms of convenience, the GT variant includes dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front sports seats, a 6-way power-adjustable driver seat, a 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a leather multi-function steering wheel (with heating), an electric sunroof/panoramic sunroof (spec-dependent), a powered tailgate, a wireless smartphone charging pad with cooling vents, keyless entry with push-button start, remote engine start, and rain-sensing automatic wipers. Boot space ranges from 360 litres to 570 litres, expanding to over 1,000 litres with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats folded down.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Safety-wise, the Omoda O5 GT upholds the OMODA brand’s stringent safety standards. The body structure utilises a high-strength cage design with 78% high-strength steel, where critical structural load paths can withstand pressures exceeding 1,800 MPa, engineered with an energy-dispersing crash structure to effectively manage impact energy. Standard passive safety equipment includes at least 6 airbags (front dual, front side, and full-length side curtain airbags). In Euro NCAP crash assessments, Omoda models (including the O5 GT's SUV sibling, the Omoda 5) earned a maximum five-star safety rating, scoring 87% for Adult Occupant Protection and 87% for Child Occupant Protection. For active safety, the Omoda O5 GT packs a Level 2 or Level 2.5 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) comprising over 15 features, including full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC with Stop & Go), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), and Driver Fatigue Monitoring. High-spec trims also come with a 360° surround-view camera (with a 180° transparent underfloor view on selected versions) to provide complete visibility when parking.

Market Performance & Reception

Market performance for the Omoda O5 GT varies considerably across regions. Following its rollout in Mexico, the model swiftly expanded into markets including Russia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, and Malaysia, with prices spanning roughly RM180,000 to RM300,000 (subject to local duties and variant specifications). In Australia, the 1.6T GT FWD carried a drive-away price of AUD 38,990 (approx. RM183,000), while the GT AWD was tagged at AUD 40,990 (approx. RM192,000). However, because the GT was positioned as a limited-run offering (which Chery had not clearly stated at launch), the variant was quietly retired from the Australian lineup in December 2024, lasting just over nine months on sale. In Indonesia, the FWD Omoda 5 GT was officially priced at IDR 453,800,000, while the AWD variant retailed for IDR 493,800,000. The OMODA brand has seen robust uptake in the UK market—posting 910 registrations in April 2025 alone and outpacing selected Tesla models in that market during the same period; in Spain, OMODA achieved 7,247 vehicle sales in the first three quarters of 2025, commanding a notable share among Chinese carmakers locally. In terms of media reviews, overseas automotive journalists praised the Omoda O5 GT for its noticeable power surge from the 1.6T mill, stylish cabin layout, and generous warranty of seven years or more. Conversely, criticism was levelled at low-speed jerkiness from the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, highway driver assistance systems that require further calibration, and poorer value-for-money compared to the entry-level 1.5T model. As the global strategic counterpart to the Arrizo 5 GT, the Omoda O5 GT has carved out a unique brand image in the overseas compact sports sedan segment thanks to its aggressive design and differentiated powertrain.
